mail working [15 Oct 2005|03:02pm]

mail is working. if your mail was forwarding, it's forwarding. if your mail was spooling, you'll have to wait to get at it. i can add any email forwards you like. let me know. brandie, i'll also put your forward in.

mail spools recovered [15 Oct 2005|11:40am]

i was able to recover all mail spools. three have been truncated due to read errors: bk, dave and edward. i don't think these 3 users were using the system for mail, anyway. i'm now moving on to getting sendmail happy.

more headway... or less [14 Oct 2005|12:41am]

today was busy at work so i didn't get to devote as much time to the system as i would have liked. i still spent all evening working on it.

i've got it up and on the internet. dns will be the first app back up. i'm going to try to get mail spooling again before the end of tomorrow. we'll see how that goes.

i want to replace the bootloader. it'd be nice if i could dual-boot this thing to get to the slackware environment... or something just so that i can try and fsck that disk some more. it'd be nice to be able to get to a point we could pull the good data off the disk. i don't know what road is going to lead there, though.

putting the thing back on the net was a pain in the ass. i wanted to make sure i had every unnecessary/unknown service shut off before i turned in. solaris has totally changed their inetd and boot sequences. christ on a cracker. anyway, methodically checking lsof, i was able to determine that only statd, lockd, named, sshd and dhcpagent are running. i'd like to turn those nfs daemons off, but i'm not sure how. that'll be a project for tomorrow.

at this point, i'm kinda looking forward to having some time to sit and read the solaris 10 admin manuals. maybe, after this is all over, i'll get re-certified.

ryan, i haven't created your account yet. i'll get to it when i feel there's enough room in the kitchen for an extra cook.

status update:

i bought a new hard drive and installed it.

i don't know if we've lost a lot of data to corruption or inaccessability. the problem is that the old disk is throwing all kinds of I/O errors every time i access it and sometimes these cause kernel panics/system reboots. i'm going to try to write a script that will methodically attempt to retrieve data from the old disk.

i can't say how soon before we'll be letting residents move back in. i need to purchase a 10/100 switch if i wanted to get the thing back on the network immediately. that still wouldn't mean that all services would be working right. it's going to take a while for me to be comfortable with this thing out on the net. i just don't know enough about the changes in solaris 10 to feel like the system is secure. i'll be fixing that over the coming days.

anyway, that's the status update. i'd expect a full return to service within a week or so, maybe? who knows.

moving time [31 May 2005|03:27pm]

i'm trying to do my best to do notification here.

apt103.net will be moving datacenters soon. that means that any of you that have domains that point at us are going to have to do five minutes of work. this means you, if your domain is listed below:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 774 Jan 31 2002 db.bedrockersonline.com
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 609 Sep 8 2002 db.freeyourpants.com
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 768 Sep 8 2002 db.slowpokeracing.com
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 768 Sep 8 2002 db.slowpokeracing.net
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 768 Sep 8 2002 db.slowpokeracing.org
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 595 Sep 8 2002 db.chutup.net
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 616 Nov 11 2002 db.stillnotfound.net
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 607 Aug 10 2003 db.midgetfanclub.com
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 602 Aug 10 2003 db.ewoknation.com
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 678 Jun 14 2004 db.thereacharounds.com

you need to change your nameservers for your domain. if you don't change your nameservers, then as the box transitions, people won't know how to find your web sites. this is very important. all you have to do is change your name servers to be the following:

after you do that, i'll be able to keep serving out answers for your domains. all will be happy. let me know once you've made the change and i'll make sure you get added to the secondary server.

return to service [24 May 2005|01:33am]

the server is back up thanks to hardware donations from crushinator. as far as repairs/upgrades go... we gained 150w of power, 200mHz of cpu and 256m of ram. everything is looking good. let me know if you see any problems.

oh yeah, and we were able to determine the bad component. it looks like the motherboard was shot. that's the second one that junkie has gone through. i'm putting money on the 150w power suply as cause. hopefully things will work out a lot better with the 300w. good to know i didn't waste time and effort on that.

well... it's not the power suply [22 May 2005|10:29pm]

i popped the system open to take a look at things. i noticed the power suply was 150w. that's toally not sufficient to run an Athlon XP processor. that's probably why we were losing clock cycles and the system clock would end up behind.

anyway, i went out and bought a new 300w power suply. i got it home and went to install it. due to the fact that they only sell power suplies that go in tower cases at microcenter, i needed to make modifications to it. first, i needed to attach an ATX connector with longer cables... then i needed to redo the AC-in to support the power suply being in front while the AC jack was in back. soldering and unsoldering the cable took forever, but i got it done. i got the whole thing put together... and the system still wouldn't come on.

i tested the power suply in a different system and tested the system with a different power suply (in case i'd shorted something). no dice. power suply good... something else bad. i went through and started pulling out other components. looks like it's either the motherboard or the processor. there are scorch marks (or corrosion) at the ends of a few of the CPU pins. certainly not a good sign. i need to figure out if i should get some krazy kenny shit to get this bad boy running again... or order a new mobo/proc/memory online... or get a netra off of ebay. i've determined that rockstar, with it's 300mHz processor is not going to be a replacement for junkie. maybe, if i buy a new cpu/mobo, i'll get one that is 1U so that it can fit in rockstar's case.

anyway... that's the skinny. server certainly won't be up tonight. maybe not even tomorrow.

hey... and i took pictures of the power suply rebuild. they're here.

server update [22 May 2005|01:57am]

okay, so it's a bad power suply. that would explain the issue on friday, too. it's a good thing that the power suply went out and not the disk. i'm still trying to figure out if i should replace it. i think this might be a good time to move over to rockstar. i'll work on it tomorrow.

current outage [21 May 2005|01:56am]

the server crashed this afternoon. don't know why.
the disk was coming up dirty, kept fscking and then rebooting.
it was fine until a couple of hours ago. presumably, the same thing is happening now.
you should assume that the server is going to be down for the weekend while i attempt to repair it.

i could bother to find out why bandwidth usage has doubled over the last couple of months. maybe i'll look tomorrow. this is warning, though. if it stays like this, i'm shutting down the server. i just can't afford to pay 100+ bucks a month for bandwidth on top of the 100 for the rack fee. i've already had an offer where i can go in on someone elses server for 40 bucks a month... and i don't have to do any of the admin work. (not that i really do a lot of admin work now) the point is... the server is costing me money i don't have. if you don't want to be caught with your pants around your ankles, start moving off now.

edit: okay, i couldn't resist taking a look. top prize goes to billy, who had up a 2 meg animation in his document root. i'm not sure if he's the one who posted it, but someone put that badboy up in a forum. second place goes to spinsane! spinsy has a bmp of him and a girl that clocks in at a whopping 4 megs. this was picked up by a url catcher in #maltliquor on irc and has evidently been popular enough to eat up considerable bandwidth this week.

unfortunately, that's only the recent spikes. overall, it looks like it's just a considerable amount of mp3 traffic. i think i have the ability to now track the cost by file owner. perhaps i'll post something within the next couple of days.

ryan and i are doing some cleaning. if your name is on this list and you're not us... which you inherently aren't... you need to do something about your mailbox. if you don't do something soon, we will. that something will likely be rm -rf.

mp3 rules have now been applied to wma's. the noreferer rule is currently taken off for mp3's as a trial. i've only seen a 40 percent boost in bandwidth usage as a result. i think i'm willing to live with that for now.

made another deny rule for mp3's on the server. this was mostly to curb that asshole sean's use of bandwidth. 1/3 of the bandwidth usage on sunday night was for his gary jules mp3. i went to see how people were linking to it... but turned up a lot of blank referers. referals are now required for mp3's. this means that people can click on links to them, but need to say how they got there in order to do so. should scale back usage a bit and also let you know who is pulling your files. god damned robots are scouring everything, anymore, and putting it all on search engines. i don't want to hamper our use, but i think this is a good way to try and block some of them.

apache died at 6am on saturday morning. i haven't investigated the reason. ryan restarted the service at 8am sunday morning. everything is running fine.

getting wise [04 Dec 2003|01:15am]

tonite i instituted a site-wide change... no more streaming mp3's through apache. this is a good thing. it looks like people were taking advantage of mp3s we are nice enough to share and adding them to their playlists... this means they download the song each time they listen to it instead of keeping a copy on their machine. now everyone is forced to download it first (unless they're using a media player other than real, win media player, netscape media player or winamp). if any of your know of any other media players out there (and preferably their User-Agent strings), please let me know. this is a good thing for all of us. I'll probably add such restrictions to other media types if they become problems.

apache fun [02 Dec 2003|11:10pm]

went through and cleaned out a lot of stale VirtHost/dns/host entries.
moved some stuff from /var/www/htdocs into user's public_html dirs since apache no longer serviced them.
added central logiing facility to all VirtHosts, except ones with undefined
started log rotation on error_log and access_log in /var/log/apache

i'm going to start monitoring the statistics coming out of apache. this is the best i can do to track down where all of our usage is coming from. i think it may be from a proliferation of mp3 search engines. it's not that i mind usage, but i didn't give anyone the okay to start sucking up 300k/month avg of bandwidth. if everyone were to just start using that, this damned thing would cost a thousand dollars a month. on that note, i also shelled out $300 against the past due amount for our bill. i now only have $857.11 outstanding.
